HENRY NIEMAN

Henry Nieman enlisted in Company C, 17th U.S. Inf., December 19, 1895.

On December 20 he left Buffalo for Columbus Barracks, Ohio. The regiment left Columbus Barracks February 14, 1899; arrived in New York City February 16, and left for the Philippines. February 19, 1899, on the transport "Sheridan," sailing via the Suez Canal, touching Gibraltar, Port Said, Malta, Colomba, Singapore and Ceylon.

The transport arrived in Manila April 14, 1899 where the troops were landed at once. Henry Nieman took part in the following:

  • expedition up the Rio Grande de Pampanga River May 16, 1899;
  • engaged at Sen Luis May 17, entered the towns of Candaba, Santa Ana, Mexico, and
  • arrived at San Fernando May 15, 1899;
  •  took part in engagement at the place on same date and subsequently
  •  in battle of June 16, 1899;
  •  engagements of June 22, June 30, July 4 and 9th.

    The regiment advanced from San Fernando to Calumnet,

  • taking insurgent trenches August 9, 1899;
  • engagement in front of Angeles August 10;
  •  advanced from Calument to Magalang,
  •  engaging the enemy at San Jose and
  • driving them back in a running fight beyond Magelang November 5, 1899.

    The advance to the north was continued and on

  •  November 10 Companies C and A, made reconnaissance toward Tarlac,
  • struck the enemy heavily entrenched at Masijum and
  •  at once engaged them, driving them into Conception.

    •  

     

    On November 11, 1899, the companies took part in a battle at Masijum

  • and arrived in Tarlac November 13, 1899.
  •  The advance led on from Tarlac November 18, and
  • marched through the towns of Gerona, Paniqui, Moncada and Bantista
  •  into Bayamgang where the Company took station.

    On November 27, 1899, the Company marched to Dagapan

  •  and on the 29th returned to Bantista
  •  and from that time garrisoned the towns of Cagaman from December 18, 1899 to Jan 17, 1900;
  •  Malasiqui from Jan 17 to June 20;
  • Rosales from June 21 to October 21,
  •  Calasiao and San Carlos October 22, 1900 to Mar 26, 1901.
  • Lingayen was the last station garrisoned by Co. C.

    After several months in Lingayen Co. C

  • returned to Manila and embarked for home on the transport "Buford,"
  •  having spent two years and five months on the island of Luzon.
  • The transport "Boford" made the homeward trip in 83 days
  • from Manila to New York where the Company took train for Fort Ethen Allen, Vt.

    •  

     

    Henry Nieman was there discharged after three years of loyal service.
