HOWARD GOWAN OBITUARY

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Howard Gowan, 79, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2022. Born in Olean, N.Y., Howard was one of 11 children, including his twin brother, Harry.

A life-long patriot, Howard proudly served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army, and served in Korea and during the Vietnam Era.

Howard took his Catholic faith very seriously. As a member of the local Knights of Columbus, he rose to the level of 4th Degree Knight. Later in life he led Sunday prayer and communion services with his fellow residents at the Riviera Assisted Living Center (ALC). Howard befriended and was on a first name basis with many of the homeless people in the area.

He was a member of VFW Post 1590, Daytona Beach.

Howard was well known on many photography websites. He specialized in photographing birds in their natural habitats, and panoramic nature scenes. Several of his large framed pictures are displayed on the dining room walls at the ALC.

He is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Black) Gowan, of 57 years; five grown children, Matthew (Aurea) Gowan, Katherine (Justin) Antoniotta, Howard Gowan Jr., Luke Gowan and Julie (Joshua) Pearl; and several grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings, Winifred (Harold) Barber, Judith Meis, William (Marian) Gowan, Edward (Lynn) Gowan, Susan (Daniel) O'Brien and Rita (Steve) Blehar.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Junior Gowan and Loretta Hoffmier Gowan, of Olean; and siblings, Margaret Cameron, Thomas Gowan, Harry Gowan and Richard Gowan.

Memorials may be made in Howard's name to your local VFW Post or homeless shelter.

Dale Woodward Funeral Home is handling Howard's arrangements.
