OLEAN --- Victor “Vic” L. Skadowski, 82, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday (May 31, 2023) at home.

Vic was born in 1941, in Cuba to Helen and John Skadowski. A lifelong Olean resident, he graduated from Olean High School in 1959 and enjoyed staying in touch with classmates until the time of his passing. As an avid music lover, he got an early start as “DJ Big Daddy,” at Walsh High School dances. In the early 1960’s he was on-air personality “Vic Taylor” at WMNS, hosting the popular “Memory Lane” where listeners could call in their requests. Shortly after high school, he started as a Draftsman at Clark Brothers, where he worked through several iterations of company ownership before he retired from Dresser-Rand after over 40 years of service. He also kept in touch with his Dresser friends through retirement. Vic was a past President, and lifetime member, of the Pulaski Club in Olean. In the early 1970’s, he was the commissioner of the Olean Tavern Softball League and coached Ben Jen’s softball team.

Mr. Skadowski cared deeply about his hometown, and his family, and will be dearly missed. He was predeceased by his parents, and brother-in-law, Frank Jester. Surviving are; three siblings, Joyce Dembowski, John (Jeanne) Skadowski, and Glenda Jester, nieces Ann (Phil) Terrano, and Deanna (Steve) Foster; nephews Charles Dembowski, Brian Dembowski, and Adam (Rachel Askey) Jester; and grandnephews Christopher Dembowski, Matthew Hopkins, and Kyle Foster; along with a number of cousins.

Friends will be received at the Guenther Funeral Home, 1303 E. State Street, Olean on Sunday (June 4, 2023) from 12 pm to 3 pm with a funeral service held immediately thereafter. A private burial will be held at a later date.

Note: Besides being a long time friend, Vic was one of several classmates who encouraged me in this endeavor, helped with research, and provided me with many old newspaper clippings that allowed me to post those that predated the internet. RIP my old friendDick Allen, Admin.
