Max B. Phillips Sr., 76, of Nelliston, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1941, in Olean, N.Y., the son of the late Mace M. and Alice G. (Becker) Phillips, Sr. and was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1959. Max furthered his education at the University of Pittsburgh, and was a graduate of Prairie Bible College.

His marriage to Tamra A. Palmer took place on Oct. 10, 1964, in Bradford, Pa.

Mr. Phillips was a United States veteran, enlisting in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1962.

Max was last employed as a school bus driver for the Little Falls/Fonda Bus Company. At one time he worked for the Brown Bus Company in Amsterdam.

Mr. Phillips was an active member of the Christian Church of Rural Grove.

A man dedicated to his family, Max’s life was centered around his loved ones. He enjoyed the quality time he spent traveling with his loving wife Tammy. An avid fan of stock car racing, Max was a member of the Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame in 2016.

Survivors include her loving wife of 53 yeas, Tamra (Tammy); three children, Mace G. Phillips, Sr., and wife Constance of Starkville, Margaret S. Grandshaw of Canajoharie and Max B. Phillips, Jr. and wife Takako of Sendi, Japan; six grandchildren, Joshua Phillips, Sarah Bishop, Mace G. Phillips, Jr., Morgan Grandshaw, Logan Grandshaw, and Zachary Phillips; six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Connor, Philip, Silas, Mace III and Grayson; a brother-in-law, Francis Frederick of Tennessee.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was pre-deceased by his siblings, Mace Phillips, Jr., Clayton R. Phillips, Martin Phillips, and Marion “Sue” Frederick.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY 518-568-7040. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at 3 p.m. at the Christian Church of Rural Grove, 170 Rural Grove Road, Sprakers, N.Y., with the Rev. Joshua Fetterhoff, officiating. In lieu of flowers please make all memorial contributions to the Christian church of Rural Grove, 170 Rural Grove Road, Sprakers, NY 12166. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
