William Sweet
1940 - 2024

William "Bill" Sweet of Amherst, NY, passed away on March 19, 2024.

William (Bill) was born in Olean, NY in 1940 to Robert and Collette (Bender) Sweet. A graduate of Olean High School and Buffalo State College, he was an Earth Science teacher at Iroquois High School for over 30 years, as well as a Cross Country coach. Bill achieved All-American status for Cross Country in 1959 and was inducted into the Buffalo State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990. Bill shared his love of science with generations of high school students.

In the 1980s, he was also a weekend weatherman for WKBW in Buffalo. Bill loved talking with people and sharing stories, and his sense of humor was legendary.

Bill was a beloved husband and is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Gretchen Sweet (nee Kaese). He was father to Tanya Sweet of Brooklyn, NY, and Erik Sweet (Lori Quillen), of Albany, NY, and grandfather to Nolan and Norah Sweet, also of Albany, NY.

A memorial will be held in the Buffalo area this summer to celebrate his life. Bill loved animals, so in lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter or SPCA.
