Parkhill Family

We are in the process of compiling data on the Robert F. Parkhill Family.  We have established the fact that this family was the second generation of the New Ireland settlement.  The McCarty family were one of the early families to settle in the town of Carrollton, located in the Southern tier of Western New York.  This same area today is known as the town of Limestone.  They sold their property to Mary Parkhill in the year of 1891, in consideration for natural love and affection and of the sum of one dollar.  The deed showing the transfer of the property indicates that Mary McCarty was the daughter of Simon McCarty.  However, from our previous research of the census records, we have found that Mary McCarty, born in 1856, was listed as the daughter of Jeremiah McCarty, who we assume was the brother of Simon McCarty.  This leaves us with the question as to which Mc Carty was her real father?  Mary later wed Robert F. Parkhill, who also conveyed two parcels of land to her in the year 1911, in consideration of one dollar and other good and valuable consideration.  We have determined that Robert F. Parkhill emigrated from Canada and settled into New Ireland in 1871.  He then married Mary Parkhill sometime between the years of 1871 and 1876.  The couple had three children. On October 17, 1891, Robert F. Parkhill became a citizen of the United States by renouncing his allegiance to Canada and the Queen of Great Britain (See figure 1. below).  In 1934, all the property owned by Mary Parkhill was sold to the people of the State of New York for the sum of thirteen hundred dollars.  This was the middle of the Great Depression and we can only surmise this would have been a helpful financial acquisition for her.  At the time of the transfer, Mary was 78 years old. In turn the property was later made a part of the Allegany State Park. This story will continue to be compiled.  If you have any knowledge of the Parkhills please contact me.  Recently we had the pleasure of talking to one of Mary McCarty Parkhill's descendants about the confusion we are having discerning Jeremiah and Simon's relationship.
