Quaker Bridge, NY
I am trying to find information on Quaker Bridge. Someone sent me a little info via internet saying that it no longer exists. My great grandfather supposedly help build Quaker Bridge. I assume it was a town. My ggrandfather helped build the school. This was sometime after the civil war, I think. My greatgrandmother had the last name of Cain and my records show she was born in Quaker Bridge on 25 November 1860. Her parents were Robert Cain and Mary McNamara Cain.

Any help you can give me toward locating the Cain and/or McNamara family and anything about Quaker Bridge would be appreciated. I have names of a Otto and Orville, and perhaps Tom, Paul and Henry Cain. Thank You. (no name, just invalid email address)

ARRANTS
Richard Arrants Fri Jun 6 1997
A bible lists the following names: Mary ARRANTS (1791), William ARRANTS (1793), Marcy ARRANTS (1795), James ARRANTS (1797), Elizabeth ARRANTS (1799), Adna ARRANTS (1801), John ARRANTS (1804), Hezekiah ARRANTS Jr. (1806). James (according to his son's Civil War military records) was born in Cattaraugus Co. and is listed there in 1840 & 1850 US census. Hezekiah Jr (according to census records) was born in PA. The spelling of the name has varied according to phonetical whim: Arrants, Arrance, Arentse, etc. I would like to know anything about this family! There is a Bailey ARRENTS, Ann ARRANTS, Thomas ARRANTS, Sally ARANTS listed in the 1850 US Census in Cattaraugus Co. I would like to know the parents af all these Arrants'. Also would like any marriage, land, cemetery records, etc. that the Co. has for any of these people.

AIKEN
Wendy Loughlin Sat May 17 1997
I am looking for information about the surname AIKEN, specifically Jennie AIKEN. I know that she is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar, NY, next to Jasper JOHNSON, whom she "supposedly" married. However, there is some confusion about the "status" of her relationship with Jasper: the rumor is that they never actually married. As a result, someone (probably my great grandfather, Harry CUDDING of Bolivar) had her headstone removed, shaved and re-used. Therefore, I do not have any dates on her -- but I do know she died between 1929 and 1958. I found a listing for a Jennie Johnson in the 1920 Soundex records. This Jennie was 25 years old and living at 332 Tompkins Street in Olean, with a boarder named Emmett A. Thompson. In that same Soundex, Jasper Johnson was enumerated with his mother, Jane Johnson, with the address of Olive Street, Bolivar, which I know as the Johnson family home. I do not know why Jennie and Jasper were not enumerated together, unless it was because they were unmarried. Jasper was 59 in 1920. He died in 1929, in Machias.

BRANT May 1997
Jeanne Robbins Peterson

Am looking for information of Elosia and Rufus Brant.  They lived in Olean
around the early 1900's.  I need to find out Elosia Brant's maiden name, or
previously married name (could it have been Lindsay?), as I suspect she might
be my g.grandmother.   I have been in contact with Myrtle Brant who lives in
a nursing home in Olean.  Her name was given to me by my cousin.  Myrtle
remembers Elosia, but at age 95, hasn't been too much help, especially since
she is an in-law and didn't know the Brant family all that well.

Are Elosia and Etta the same person?:
My g.grandfather, Parley Lindsay, (b.c1872 in Port Alleghany,PA) lived most
of his life in McKean County, PA.  He married Etta or Ettie (maiden name
unknown) and had a daughter, Bessie - b13Sep1892 in Olean.  There is no birth
record for Bessie in McKean County, PA.  Would that certificate be located in
Little Valley, NY?  Bessie Lindsay either married Earl Truman Robbins or
simply lived with him and had my father, Earl, Jr. (later baptized John
Francis Robbins) 11Jun1914 in Buffalo, NY.

After Parley & Etta Lindsay had 3 children, Etta either died (there's no
record of that in McKean Co.) or divorced Parley (also no record in PA)
because there is a record of Parley marrying again to a Fannie Lawton and
living in Ceres Twp, PA.  Parley Lindsay died in a hospital in Olean, NY
30 Jan 1942.  Where would his death certificate be - in Little Valley, NY?.
Although I have always thought the vital records would be in the town of resi
dence, I have searched the records for McKean County in Smethport, PA and
have found no death certificate.

Thanks,
Jeanne Robbins Peterson

CLARK
Stephen Shackelford Sun Oct 5 15:51:40 1997
I am looking for information regarding the biological parents of my grandmother Emma Elizabeth CLARK. To the best of my knowledge she was born in Cattaraugus County (probably in Olean) on Oct. 13, 1894. Some time between the spring and fall of 1897 her parents and all of her siblings died in a diphtheria epidemic. Shortly thereafter she was adopted by a German immigrant couple named Christian and Lena Gries. As far as I know, Christian Gries may have worked with Emma's father (probably in Olean). Christian and Lena were Catholics, but I don't know if my grandmother's biological parents were also Catholic. When my grandmother was 18 years old she learned of her adoption and that her birth surname was Clark (Clarke) and that she was the only survivor in her family of a diphtheria epidemic. If possible, I would like to learn the names of her biological parents and siblings, as well as the dates of their deaths.

DUDLEY
Harry Leisk Mon Jul 28 1997
I'm looking for information on Charles Guilford Dudley, DoB 4 August, 1822, in Leon, Cattaraugus County. His father may have been Edmond or Edmund Dudley, who is listed in the U.S. Census of 1820 and the New York State Census of 1825. The 1825 Census lists Edmund in Leon as head of a family of 7 males and 4 females. He is also listed as occupant of 40 acres, owner of sheep, cattle and hogs and manufacturing his own linen and wool cloth. One marriage is reported to have occurred in his family in the year preceding the 1825 Census. The Index of Deeds for Cattaraugus County lists, between 1829 and 1869 a considerable number of land transactions involving Dudleys. Some of these, including several involving Edmund appear to be between family members. Others involve the Holland Land Company. One of these transactions, dated October, 1858 lists Charles G. Dudley as "Grantee" and Edwin J. Spaulding as "Grantor". The Dudleys listed in the Index of Deeds are: Edmund, John L., Elizabeth R., Blandina, John, Zina, Patience (?), Alanson L., Nelson S., Charles G. and Lucy. Edmund Dudley is listed in the U.S. Census of 1850 as 70 years of age, living alone in Leon with no occupation. Charles G. married Elizabeth Forge Simpson in Milwaukee, WI on 28 January, 1861. I'm interested in information confirming his family of origin, siblings, his parents names, and anything else at all. Harry Leisk, 709 39th Street Sacramento, CA, 95816-3938

DYE
JINI RAMSEY Sat May 10 1997
I am doing research on a part of my family who resided in Cattaraugus County namely Olean and Allegany around the late 1800's. I am searching for information on William Henry DYE,Sr. who was born in 1871. I believe that William Henry DYE had a much older bachelor brother named Mason Morey DYE. William Henry DYE married a Jennie SMITH who was born in Oct. 1871. They had several children including my grandfather Mason Morey DYE born Jan. 21,1904. Some of the other children were Geneive DYE, Helen DYE, William Henry DYE, Lynn DYE. Jennie SMITH had several siblings also. I can only recall two of the names: Carrie Smith who I believe married a George PIERCE and a Fred SMITH. Again I believe there were several others Buth their names I cannot recall. I do not have the names of the parents of the SMITH children nor do I have the names of the DYE brothers. William Henry DYE and Jennie SMITH were living in Allegany at the time of the 1900 census on Johnson Street. They had one child at that time named Harriet. Neither my mom nor myself recall any mention of this child within the family although we both know that at least one of the children did not live to adulthood. The other people I am looking for I know very little about. Patrick KENNEY beleived to come to America around 1897; however from Ireland. I have conflicting information on his birth from the 1900 census and the 1920 census. He married a woman named Margret(surname unknown but could be FORREST) who came to America from Ireland around 1890. They had 3 children: Marion KENNEY, Marcella KENNEY (my grandmother), and Ann KENNEY (went by Noreen in the family). Patrick KENNEY and his wife Margret are buried at Saint Bonaventure's cemetary. Any information on these people and or their forebearers would be greatly appreciated. It is also believe that part of these families had some connection to Penn.

Bill Little Sun, 15 Jun 1997
I am searching the name FERRY. I have a letter to Alfred FERRY, Mentor, Lake Co., OH, dated 5 Feb. 1891 from J. E. Hagard or Hazard. It concerns a very small inheritance ($2.13). It tells of the sale of the HILL land sold for debts against it and costs of funeral expenses. In it it mentions a John D. FERRY, who I believe lived in Randolph or Poland at the time. It tells Alfred to respond to the State Bank of Randolph to receive his inheritance. Alfred FERRY was my ggrandfather, his father was James, b. 1827 in NY, d. 1880, Lake Co., OH; his father was Silas, b. 1795, NY, d. 1864, Lake Co., OH. do you know if these bank records are still on file, or are the probate records available for inspection? I would also like to find out more information about James, Silas, and their ancestors. Can you give me any leads or places to go to search? Thank you, Bill Little

HIGBEE
Arthur Olson Mon Jun 30 1997
Minerva Higby died in 9/26/1889. I believe her husband was Calvin Hartwell. She was buried in the Liberty Park Cem. at New Albion. I am looking for her parents whom I believe are my g.g. grandparents but I do not know their names. Do you folks have a record of Minerva's obituary? It might give her parents names, I hope. Maybe also check her mariage license (probably in late 1820's). Thank you very much.

I hope you can be of some assistance in helping me find the given name of my gr., gr., grandfather ( __ ? ___ Higby / Higbee) and the maiden name of his wife (my gr., gr., grandma).

All I know about them was that they had a number of children, and I do not know how many they reared. The only ones I am sure of are a son (who happened to be my great grandfather -- George Higbee born in 1816) and a daughter named Minerva Higbee. The family lived in New Albion at least from the 1830's until they passed away. My gr. grandfather George Higbee left New Albion in the late 1840's and came to Wisconsin. The sister Minerva married a Calvin Hartwell. According to the 1850 census their oldest child was born about 1830 in Catt. Co., and Minerva probably married a year or so before that. According to some cemetery records I reviewed from the Mormon Library, Minerva died 9/26/1889 at the age of 82; so, she was born about 1806 or 1807. Minerva was buried in the Liberty Park cemetery in New Albion. Ordinarily when a person is married or dies, their parents are named on the marriage or death certificate. If details about their parents names etc. could be found I could finish up my project. Is their anyway you can help through local records. Thank you, and I appreciate any help.
Best Regards ------- Arthur L. Olson

LEE
Katherine Mellentine
My great, great grandparents were from Perrysburgh, NY. The 1850 census lists my great, great grandfather's name as Elon Lee (born in VT abt. 1798). According to a brief history by my grandfather, the name should be spelled "Ellien". Ellien Lee married Charlotte Chadwick from NY, born abt. 1805. The census lists children: Daniel (24), Stephen (22), Laura S (20), male (17)-name not able to make out, Solomon (14), Eli (12), Elizabeth J (10), Maria (7), Camilla (5), William J (2) (my great grandfather). The census then lists in the same household, a female 25 years old (name not able to make out) and Mary J, an 8 month old baby. These are the surnames I have for Perrysburgh. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to get more information on this family. Thank you!

LINSEY / GROSS
Larry Gross Tue, 23 Apr 1997
My grandmother, Florence Mae LINSEY GROSS was born in Olean, NY on 31 July 1883 and died in Cuba, NY on 5 March 1970. She was the daughter of George William Linsey, b. 15 April 1858 in Bennington Center/Wyoming Co/NY and d. 23 January 1909 in Oil City/Venango Co/PA. Her mother was Arvilla Aurora Keller, b. 16 June 1861 in Olean or Allegany/NY and d. 17 March 1893 in Olean, NY. She was the daughter of Jacob and Lousia Keller. Her father, Jacob Keller, served in Company A of the 85th NYV during the Civil War.

The above George William Linsey, Sr. was the son of Joseph Linsey, b. about 1809 in Germany and we believe he died in Hinsdale on 23 July 1885. We believe his mother to be Mary Reamback (Various spellings) based on what was written on his death cert.

I currently am in contact, via e-mail, with several cousins across the US. The above George William Linsey, Sr was just one of may Linsey children. We are also currently tracking down all the married daughter's descendants.

The above Florence Mae Linsey GROSS married my grandfather, Lee Wesley Gross on 30 July 1905 in Cuba, NY. They had six children and thus there is still a large clan in Cuba/Allegany Co/NY. I was born and raised there, Cuba High School, Class of 1965, Brockport State, Class of 1969. I have ton of information on the GROSS, LINSEY, KELLER, HOPPER, MORGAN, and BLAKEMORE lines.

METCALF/BISHOP/WOOD/SAWYER/HYDE 1830s Freedom, New York. I am looking for relatives of Rufus METCALF, born 18 June 1786 in Whiting, Vermont, who lived in Freedom, New York. His daughter Eliza METCALF married John WOOD, who was born in Washington County, New York, 13 March 1804. We have several letters from her, and hope her descendants may have other letters. We think Rufus half sister Polly METCALF married a SAWYER. We know Eunice SAWYER married Tilton HYDE in Freedom, but we do not know if there is a connection. We found a letter from his mother Polly HYDE to Dilla METCALF, written from Kirtland, Ohio. Rufus son Dexter METCALF married Emeline BISHOP, who was the daughter of Bethuel BISHOP. (Not John BISHOP) We have recently found a letter written by Emeline from Quincy, Illinois in April 1838 which should be of interest to descendants.

SALISBURY /MILLER
Maynard and Ida Wiese
Do you have anything on this couple, or their ancestry? I have the 1850 census of Chataqua Co, New York, and the 1860 census from Stevenson Co, Illinois, that give nearly all the children, the name of a married dau and her family, the obituary of a son and the obituary of the wife. >From these sources; Walter MILLER b 01 Aug 1802 New York State, d 14 Jan 1865 Stephenson Co, Il married 1823 Polly SALISBURY b 1807 Cataraugus Co, NY, d 01 Nov 1879 age 72 Stephenson Co, IL.
Both are buried in Eleroy Cem, Eleroy, Stephenson Co, IL, but there is a misreading of Polly's tombstone in the published record of the cemetery, making her age 20 at death. A careful examination of the stone corrected this in our family record.
While all records we have located use Polly as the wife's name, it is always possible it was a nickname. Her obituary (The Lena Star 07 Nov 1879) calls her Polly Salisbury, but there is no indication she had a 2nd husband, so we are assuming it was her maiden name.
Polly's obit states she joined the M.E. church at age 16, moved to IL in 1854 with her husband and some children and died at dau Janet Reber's home.
Known children;Prudence(Sprague), Harriet(Bentley), James, Dexter Monroe, Amanda, Rosette, Salem Walter, Garrett, Morris R, Gaylord, Amelia, Adelia, Sarah, Janette(Reber). There were 2 more, names unknown, although one may have m John(Jonathan) Reynolds. Salem and probably at least two brothers were in the Civil War.
If you have anything, m date, parents, the two missing children, etc, I'd be very grateful.

WAYNE: Trying to find any Wayne/Wain/Waine family of New Scotland/Bethlehem, Albany County, NY any time between 1750 and 1850. I am also trying to find Harriet Wayne (Waine) or Anthony Wayne (Waine), both of New Scotland and/or Bethlehem. It is possible that Harriet is listed under a different first name. She was born in 1814, and married Isaac Hardenbergh Wands (son of James Burnside Wands and Catherine Hardenbergh), also of New Scotland/Bethlehem. In 1850, Isaac and Harriet Wayne Wands were in Chemung County, and went on to OLEAN, Cattaraugus County by 1852. They died in New Orleans LA in 1878.

They were married in NY State in 1870 and their oldest child Charles WINER was born in New Orleans, NY 25 Aug. 1871. Evidence at present suggests that "New Orleans" may very well be Olean, NY in Cattaraugus Cty. due to its proximity to PA. (Bradford area) where other relations of this line were located: namely Orletta SHORES (b. 7 Jan 1851). Other siblings of Charles were born after they moved to Iowa about 1873. Names of siblings were: John WINER, Anna WINER and Sarah WINER. Rachel NEU's father was Gottlieb NEU. Any leads appreciated.

Sally Ann's father was the first judge of Cattaraugus County. I am also looking for information on the Norton family. They moved to New York some time prior to this chest being ade. I believe they came from Goshen, Connecticut. Any information on these families would be appreciated.

NY 1850 census of Cattaraugus (federal census) has my ggggrandparents Roswell Williams, (husband) Hannah B. Williams (wife) James L. {??Joe} Williams (son) 8 years old Denzil H. Williams (son) 5 years old Mary Catherine Williams (daughter) two years old

NY 1860 census, only Hannah and Mary Catherine shown. Real estate value is less than 1850. I have not located Roswell, James or Denzil. Another daughter was born to this family and we have assumed she was born after 1850. Her name was Bell and she married a {John>>} Wagner and lived in Bradford, PA. My mother knows this for a fact, as she came to visit her sister, my mother's grandma Mary Catherine Williams Youngs about 1915

 - 20. Grandma Youngs lived with my mom and her mother at that time. Grandma Williams used to cry over her brother who died in Libby Prison (Richmond, VA confederate prison for captured Union soldiers). My mom doesn't know which brother it was, but she "thinks" both were soldiers. I have not found either, although there are many James Williams from NY in the National Archives. No Denzil/Densil Williams from NY. Than you for the time and help. Debbie. e-mail melody@prolog.net

Seeking information on Charles H.Wasson born about 1872. I believe his family might have been from the Hinsdale area which is in Cattaraugus County. However, Charles might have been born in California, later moving back east. He married Ruth Maude Drummond from Jefferson Co.,Pa. {where and when unknown}. Her family "Travis" orginally came from Westchester Co., N.Y.
